Restoring Dignity: Our Free Sanitary Towels Program

La Familia InitiativeAugust 12, 2024

Before LaFamilia started its free sanitary towels program, the situation for teenage girls in Kibagare was heartbreaking. Many girls missed school during their periods because they couldn't afford sanitary products. Some resorted to dangerous alternatives, and others fell victim to exploitation.

Since launching this initiative, we have witnessed remarkable changes. School attendance among girls has improved significantly. Teenage pregnancy rates have dropped. Girls are now more confident and empowered to pursue their education.

The program goes beyond just distributing sanitary towels. We conduct sessions on hygiene education, reproductive health, confidence building, and positive living. These sessions create safe spaces where girls can ask questions and share their experiences without judgment.

"Cases of teenage pregnancy were very high because there was no hope of positive life," recalls one of our volunteers. "All that was there was drugs, crime, and early marriages. But we thank God that all that has reduced."

Each distribution reaches hundreds of girls, and the ripple effect extends to entire families and communities. When a girl stays in school, she becomes a beacon of hope for her siblings and peers.

We continue to seek partners who can help us expand this program to reach even more girls across Nairobi's informal settlements.
