A Decade of Hope: 10+ Years Transforming Lives in Kibagare

La Familia InitiativeOctober 20, 2024

In October 2012, Stephen John Nyangoso gathered three young girls for Bible study and physical activities in Kibagare slum. He could not have imagined that this small act of faith would grow into a movement that has transformed hundreds of lives.

Looking back over more than a decade, the journey has been filled with challenges, miracles, and countless testimonies of changed lives. From those three girls, LaFamilia has grown to serve hundreds of children, teenagers, and elderly people across Kibagare and beyond.

Key milestones include: - The introduction of the Holiday Porridge and Mandazi program to protect children during school breaks - The launch of the free sanitary towels initiative that has dramatically reduced teenage pregnancy - The Elderly Food Basket program that has reached over 300 elderly people - The annual STREETFEST celebration that brings together reformed youth for positive exchange - The ROPES program in partnership with Nawiri Organisation

Through it all, challenges have been visible and growing. But by God's grace, each obstacle has been overcome one by one. The COVID-19 pandemic tested the organization like never before, yet it emerged stronger, having fed the entire Kibagare community during the crisis.

"Our vision remains unchanged: to raise a God-fearing generation that only looks up to God for help," says Nyangoso. "And our mission continues: to transform our slums into healthy and safe environments for all children."

As LaFamilia enters its second decade, the vision extends beyond Kibagare to other communities across Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and even Canada. The foundation has been laid, and the future is bright with hope.
